MIT Farm Launches to Connect Campus and Local Agriculture

October 16, 2025

MIT Farm, a new student-led initiative launched this fall, aims to connect campus and community through local agriculture. The group organizes student volunteering at regional farms, a weekly “Fresh Food Bag” produce sale, and the development of a small mobile farm prototype.

The effort began after students participated in the MIT Civilian Climate Corps, a collaboration involving the Department of Urban Studies and Planning, the Department of Architecture, and the Urban Risk Lab. Drawing on that experience, the team partnered with Hannan Healthy Foods Farm, Boston Medical Center’s Rooftop Farms, and Eastie Farm to expand volunteer and food access programs.

Since September, MIT Farm has coordinated nearly 100 volunteers and sold more than 150 subsidized produce bags through MIT’s Office of Sustainability. The group hopes to establish growing spaces on campus and strengthen partnerships with local farms to promote hands-on learning and address food insecurity.

Urban Risk Lab director Miho Mazereeuw described the initiative as “starting small with a big vision that can scale,” reflecting the program’s goal to integrate sustainable food systems into campus life and community engagement.
